Whenever you visit my website or contact me in any other way, certain (personal) information is made available by you. This privacy policy’s purpose is to help you understand which data is being collected, why it is being collected and how it’s being processed. Even though this might seem a long document, informing you thoroughly is important.
1. This Privacy Policy
This Privacy policy applies to each and every processing of data in relation to my website and mailings, to which you agree by using my website or subscribing to my mailings.
As I’m keeping this document up to date in accordance with the applicable regulation, I may update it from time to time. The most recent version is the one that is applicable and can be found on my website.
2. How do your personal data end up with me?
It’s pretty simple: by using this website, the following personal data are collected:
- IP-address
- User agent: your browser type and version
- Anonymous usage data on how you use my website.
- Cookies: see below
- Data you provide yourself on your own initiative (by contacting me through the website, e-mail, post, by giving feedback or commenting, …) or consent to providing (such as location data).
How are these data being processed?
The data collected through the use of the website are being stored in cookies:
- The cloudflare _cfduid cookie for identifying individual users privately. This cookie helps Cloudflare detect malicious visitors to my website. For more info see here.
For those who do speak legalese: these processings are necessary for my legitimate interest to run my website smoothly. Any other processings of personal data are based on consent.
If you choose to subscribe to my mailings (and consent to receiving them), the following data will be used solely for that purpose:
- your e-mail address
No other data are being collected or processed through other sources (such as social media channels).
If my website mentions any links to other websites, know that these are not being managed by me and should have their own privacy policy that applies to that website. As I am not responsible for the privacy compliance of these other website, I can only advise you to read their policies carefully as well.
Of course you are not obliged to provide me with you data. But some data are necessary to ensure the ability to access my website. By not providing them, properly using my website would become impossible.
3. Are your data being shared?
No, I do not share or sell your data to anyone. My free services and articles are indeed free, you are not paying for them with your personal data.
4. Your rights as a data subject!
As a data subject whose data are being processed, you have several rights:
You have the right to access your personal data and obtain a copy or your data and information on the processing of them.
You have the right to correct your personal data.
You have the right to have your personal data erased and to restrict the processing of your personal data.
You have the right to request the transfer of your personal data to yourself or to a third party, in a structured, commonly used machine-readable format. As this right only applies to automated information which your initially provided consent for and I do not process your information this way, you should not have to make such request.
You have the right to withdraw your consent at any time if the processing is based on your consent. Just use the ‘unsubscribe’ button at the end of my mailings or send me a simple request via email.
You can make all these requests for free, unless they become so repetitive, unfounded or excessive that I would have to hire a full time assistant to comply with them.
When exercising your rights, I might want to ensure it’s actually you. It’s just a security measure to make sure I’m not disclosing any personal data to someone who shouldn’t receive it.
Last but not least: if you have a complaint about the processing of your personal data you can always contact me via email.
In the very unlikely event the issue does not get resolved, know that you have the right to file a complaint with the Belgian Data Protection Authority at www.gegevensbeschermingsautoriteit.be. Evidently, I appreciate getting the chance to resolve any issues myself before the authorities need to intervene.
5. Security
As security is my area of expertise, all necessary and reasonable measures have been taken in order to protect your data and to avoid any loss, abuse, disclosure, unauthorized access or modification of your data.
Personal data are never stored/used/processed for an amount of time longer than is necessary for the purpose for which they are being processed. In other words: once the data are no longer needed or your consent is withdrawn, the data are deleted.
6. Minors (<13 years old)
Personal data of minors are never consciously processed without the consent of their parents or guardians. In the event I have processed personal data of a minor, in good faith, I will delete these data instantly upon discovery that they do not fulfill the necessary requirements.
